Respiratory Fit Testing

Why Face Fit Test?

If you employ staff in an environment which requires the use of a respirator with a tight-fitting facepiece it is now a mandatory requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) and the supporting Approved Codes of practice to carry out face fit testing.

Face Fit Testing is the method used to test that a tight-fitting facepiece matches the persons facial features and seals adequately to the wearers face. It also helps to ensure that poorly fitting facepieces are not selected for use. An inadequate fit will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer. Face Fit Testing can also be used to ensure that the individual knows how to properly put on and wear the respirator.

Tight fitting facepieces are:-

  • Disposable half mask respirators
  • Half masks
  • Full Face Masks

When to Fit Test

Fit testing should be carried out:

  • If an employee has never been fit tested before

or

  • If they are changing to a different model of respirator
  • Company Policy e.g. Annual health surveillance check

Fit Testing should be repeated:

  • If the wearer significantly loses or gains weight or sustains an injury that alters the shape of the face e.g. broken nose
  • If a different size or model is required
  • If specified by company policy e.g. Annual health surveillance check
